Positive Self-Talk To Practice Daily

I know I’m not the only one who has the habit of calling myself “stupid” or “an idiot” whenever I don’t get something right. Negative thoughts are ingrained into our brains whether we make a conscious decision to think about them or not. Most of the time, these thoughts are so severe that we don’t even notice we’re saying them to ourselves.

We may not be able to control the negative messages as they pop into our heads, but we can learn to become aware of them and change them over time. It takes a lot of work to even become aware of these thoughts, but once you make the decision to notice them, you will. Slowly, but surely.

Here is a quick list of phrases you can start practicing today:

Instead of: calling yourself an idiot because you did something “wrong”…

Try saying: Everybody makes mistakes. I’m only human. My mistakes are part of my learning experience and they help me improve.

Instead of: calling yourself fat…

Try saying: I am grateful for this body that I have. I will do my best to take care of it. I am learning what I need to do to take care of my body.

Instead of: comparing yourself to others…

Try saying: I bring something different to the table, and that is [blank]. I accept myself as a unique and worthwhile person.

Instead of: thinking you are worthless…

Try saying: I have so much to offer. My life has meaning and purpose. I have a lot to be proud of.

Instead of: believing you have nothing to contribute or worth saying…

Try saying: My experiences are unique to me. Nobody else can speak about them, and only I can tell my story.

Instead of: convincing yourself you should be doing more or doing better…

Try saying: I am completely lovable just as I am today. I am enough here and now. I will continue to change and grow from a place of self-acceptance.

Instead of: saying you’re not smart enough…

Try saying: I will learn how to do this.

An Adventure Guide to Bali

Bali is not for the faint of heart. Let it be known that while there are heart-achingly beautiful locations in Bali, these places also qualify as treacherous. But if you’re up for an adventure, Bali is the place to go.

I recently traveled to Bali with a couple of my friends. We were there for about a week. Here are all the details on booking, flying, swinging (you’ll see what I mean) and everything in between. A little note about this post – I will be as honest as possible concerning our experience in Bali, including the not-so-fun and scary stuff. This is because as my friends and I were researching Bali before and during our travel, every internet article or blog post only mildly described the situations we were going through. I hope you’ll find the extra details helpful!

Flights

For those of you who do not know, (myself included before I booked this trip), Bali, Indonesia is far as f*#$! It takes two days by plane to get there. Maybe one and a half, but it still feels like an eternity to arrive. With that in mind, make sure you’re traveling for a good amount of days so the traveling part is worth it. Take into consideration that if you’re going to be there for three days, it’s going to take four days of just getting there and back.

We booked our trip through the Hopper app, and because we aren’t rich, we booked a cheaper flight that included long layovers and multiple stops. In my experience, booking the flight was the most expensive part of the entire trip. We each paid about $1,500 for our round trip tickets.

The flights themselves were pretty brutal. The longest one was a thirteen hour flight from California to China. We had flights before and after, as well as layovers in different airports in different countries. So now I can say I’ve been to China because I spent like 6 hours chillin’ at their Guangzhou airport, and none of you can contradict me.

Again, because I’m not rich, our seats were normal airplane seats – not those awesome sleeping pods you see in the movies. So yes, we were sitting down for what felt like forever. The planes with the longer flights did have a personal screen where you could watch free movies, play games, or listen to music. However, be aware that no amount of free movies will prevent your feet from swelling up like balloons because you’re sitting down for so long. I’m not going to humiliate myself by posting a picture of my swollen ankles on this post, but I recommend compression socks (even though they did not work for me). My friends were a little puffy as well, but neither got it as bad as I did.

Where We Stayed

We found and booked the three places we stayed at through Booking.Com. It was so easy and convenient! Most of the places are villas or resorts, although there are a ton of home-stays as well. I’ve also heard AirBnb is a great option.

What We Did

Because the journey to Bali is long and exhausting, we wanted to strive for a few days of rest and relaxation along with our planned adventures. We found a pretty good balance of hanging out by the pool, reading, eating, and resting at our villas one day and doing ALL OF THE THINGS the next day. Seriously, we woke up at 4 a.m. because our tour started at 5 a.m.

Here’s the breakdown:

Day 1: When we arrived at the airport, we called a driver to take us from Densapar (the city in Bali where the airport is) to Ubud where our Villa was located. Ubud is about an hour and a half from the airport, and it is one of the most popular places to visit. There are a ton of places to stay at, eat, shop, drink, and everything in between. Also, it’s pretty common to have a personal driver to take you around Bali. We had a few options from friends who had been to Bali before and kept their driver’s cards for us to use.

We arrived at our extremely spacious villa that day and spent the rest of the day hanging out at the pool. I knocked out by 4:30 p.m. This is probably the best decision I made the entire trip because I would not have survived the rest of the week with jet lag.

Day 2: My very dear friend lives in Bali, so on the second day we were there, we spent the day exploring with her. The driver who had picked us up from the airport drove us around the second day as well. He recommended places to eat and pick up coffee, which we did. He also took us to Bakas Levi Rafting & Elephant Tour. But This is where we were able to ride the elephants.

Riding elephants is an absolutely insane, unsafe idea. There are no safety belts or safety ANYTHING. You are quite literally just jumping onto an elephant’s back and there is nothing to hold on to. It’s a lot of fun, but you know, you could also fall off and die. So beware.

When we rode the elephants, one of the employees sat on the elephant behind us. So, technically, we could fall back onto this person or this person could hold onto us if we so happened to be slipping off. However, there is still nothing to hold on to and it’s a scary once-in-a-lifetime experience.

At the same place, we met Joni the Orangutan. He was the cutest! We were each able to take pictures with him, as well as group pictures. It was ridiculously fun.

Day 3: We booked a tour through Booking.com and did all of the following in one day. We began at five in the morning (yes, five!) and ended around 7:30 p.m. Through the booking, a tour guide/driver is sent to your hotel and ready to take you out for the day!

Lempuyang Temple: This is also known as The Gates of Heaven. There is a temple here and men and women are required to wear sarongs and cover their shoulders. Through the tour we booked, we were provided with sarongs. The line to take a picture at the Gates can last anywhere from one to three hours. We arrived around 7 a.m. and waited in line until 9:30 a.m. to get our coveted picture. The picture they take is absolutely gorgeous, but it’s up to you whether a picture is worth the wait!

Tirta Gangga the Water Palace, Karangasem: This place is absolutely gorgeous. There’s a koi pond with gigantic koi fish. You can feed them and jump around their pond. This place almost seems unreal because everything is insanely beautiful.

Tegenungan Waterfall: For this place, I would recommend wearing a bathing suit under your clothing, or bring a bathing suit with you since there are dressing rooms to change in. There’s about a mile hike down to the waterfall, but it is worth it! The walk back up is a little hard, but nothing too complicated. Just make sure to hydrate!

Luwak Coffee Plantation: This was one of my favorite experiences in Bali. We got a tour of the plantation before we sat down for a coffee, tea, and chocolate tasting. Yes, you read that correctly, and yes, it was a dream. Plus, the view was gorgeous! Fun fact: If you don’t know what a luwak is, I have a little story for you. A luwak is a small rodent-like animal that eats coffee beans. The coffee beans then ferment in their stomachs and, well, nature takes its course. Those pooped out coffee beans are then cleaned up and luwak coffee is created! It is the most expensive coffee in the world, but since luwaks roam free on the plantation, it’s only three American dollars per cup. Yes, I tried it and I totally recommend it. Live a little!

Bali Swing and Rice Terrace: OH. MY. GOSH. Have you ever seen videos of the Bali swing? You essentially just swing out onto the open rice terraces. It’s the scariest and the most fun thing imaginable. And the rice terraces are breathtaking!

Day 4: On day four, we headed out to Nusa Penida. Nusa Penida is another island, and it takes about an hour and a half by speedboat to get there. Getting up into the boat was quite an experience. There is no dock to get onto the boat, so you basically have to climb over giant rocks with your suitcase down into the water… with your suitcase. If you’re lucky, the waves won’t be strong and the crew will take your luggage onto the boat so you don’t have to carry it into the water yourself. If you’re unlucky (like us), the waves are going to be crazy and it’s going to be hard to get onto the boat. You will also get soaked. You will also ride the hour and a half trip into the island soaking wet. Wear clothes that dry quickly!

Day 5: Through the resort we stayed at, we booked an all day tour to the following:

Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida: THIS. PLACE. DEAR. LORD. This is honestly the most beautiful view, the most beautiful water, and the most beautiful sky in all of Indonesia (at least in my opinion). But, BEWARE! If you plan on climbing down to the beach, it is dangerous. The walk down starts okay enough, with stairs and rails guiding your way down. About three quarters of the way through, the stairs disappear and all that’s left is rocky mountain climbing. The rails disappear and reappear only sporadically. There are even ropes to help you climb up or down. If you do decide to climb down, you will be covered in dirt. You will need to be hydrated, and you will be exhausted by the time you climb both down and then back up. It’s scary and there are no signs or people standing by to help. The beach and the water is absolutely gorgeous, but the current and the waves are crazy strong so we didn’t get into the water. We climbed down and admired from the edge.

Angel Billabong: Another beautiful view, but no swimming allowed. This place is a great photo op and there are several small restaurants to dine at.

Crystal Bay Nusa Penida: And finally, a beach you get to swim in and chill at. This is the place where tourists hang out. You can rent beach towels there if you don’t have one with you. There’s also beer, coconuts, and snack foods for sale. The water isn’t as beautiful as Kelingking Beach, but it also means the current isn’t as strong and you can actually swim in this water.

Day 6: And that’s it, folks! We hung out at our resort pool, had some drinks, read some books and then traveled back home. It was exhausting, but so worth it.

31 Day Shop Your Closet Challenge!

I have been feeling overwhelmed by my closet lately. I have an insane amount of clothes in there that does not fit on my shelves and racks. Some of these clothes I’ve never even worn. Other pieces I’ve worn only once or twice. And yet, I keep buying clothes!

What is this addiction and/or need that I feel to constantly buy clothes or shoes or accessories to stuff into my ready-to-burst closet? In today’s Instagram “influencer” culture, it’s hard not to give in to constant shopping sprees when new outfits are posted every single day. The crazy thing is that for all we know, these influencers don’t own the clothes. Many of them are sponsored by companies and this clothing is lent to them to advertise.

There is nothing wrong with shopping for new clothing. Keep shopping till you drop if that’s your thing! But for women like me who have no business buying new clothing when they have mountains of it at home, we can try a different approach.

A long time ago, I read Nina Garcia’s, “The Little Black Book of Style.” All these years later, what stuck with me the most from that book is this quote by Andrée Putman: “I love America, and I love American women, but there is one thing that deeply shocks me… American closets. I cannot believe one can dress well when you have so much.” I relate so much to this quote because my closet is bursting at the seams (see what I did there?) and it takes away the fun of putting together an outfit and getting ready in the morning. I can’t actually see my clothes or shoes because they’re jumbled up in stashes ready to tip over or fall off the hanger.

I’m so ready to de-clutter my closet, wear what’s in there, and stop bringing in new pieces so often. This is where the 31 Day Shop Your Closet Challenge comes in!

For the month of October, I’m not going to shop for a single piece of clothing (or shoes or accessories or bags)! If it’s not in my closet, I’m not wearing it! There are a few benefits to this approach. First, I’ll be forced to wear articles of clothing or shoes or bags I have never used before. Secondly, if I don’t want to wear them anymore, then it’s out of my closet and off to Goodwill (or Poshmark, if that’s your thing). Third, I’ll be forced to try on more clothes and if it doesn’t fit, it’s off to Goodwill. Thus, I’ll inadvertently be de-cluttering my closet and inching my way to the dream closet full of essentials and quality items only. Lastly, it will encourage me to get creative. I can mix and match pieces and accessories and create new outfits that have actually been in my closet all along. I’ll be working on developing my own personal style instead of mindlessly putting on the same things all the time.

The following are the only exceptions to this challenge. I got these from www.savvynista.com, who completed a one year shop your closet challenge and provided a lot of inspo for me.

Exception #1: You can buy something to replace a lost or damaged staple item in your closet. For example, denim jeans, leather jacket, blazer, your good white t-shirt, etc.

Exception #2: You can wear something new if it is gifted to you, like clothing, accessories, a bag, etc.

Exception #3: You can buy something if you are attending a special event or occasion, like Halloween or a wedding.

Okay, that’s all I’ve got. Wish me luck and if you’re joining me, let me know on Instagram so we can check-in and keep each other accountable! Happy Closet Shopping!

Letter to You- You Are Doing Great!

Hi there.

I know you are scrolling Instagram, double clicking away. Or maybe just lurking. Or maybe you’re comparing. We tend to do that a lot — compare ourselves to other people on the ‘gram. We compare our pictures, our bodies, our jobs, our families, all of it! Most of the time, we don’t even notice that we’re doing it.

I’m not here to tell you to stop it. You do you, boo. I’m just here to tell you to become aware of it so that it doesn’t become harmful to you. We fall into these traps where we see a flawless picture of someone or an award they post or a promotion someone just got and we think, I should be looking like that/performing like him or her/working as hard as they do. We think we need to be doing better or doing more. But why?

I’m here to tell you that you’re just fine just the way you are. You’re better than fine! You’re you! There is no other person out there that is you. Even if you’ve been sitting on your ass all day watching Netflix. Even if you haven’t washed your hair in six days. Even if you’re underweight or overweight or you just failed out of college or you don’t have a job right now. None of these things make you less worthy of love, appreciation, and compassion. There is no need to keep comparing ourselves to others to become better. Work on yourself, for yourself, and things will fall into place. I know this sounds very generic, but it’s also true. When we focus on ourselves, we begin to make things happen. We simply have to desire it enough to work for it.

Nobody is posting the struggles or shitty pictures on those Instagram squares. It’s only for the highlights, so there’s no need to feel bad over it. That shit about being “on” and looking flawless all the time is NOT real. You don’t need to look like anyone other than you. So relax, maybe wash your hair when you’re ready, and enjoy this life being yourself.

XO,

Dania

Too Sweet Inside and Outside of the Courtroom by Brittanny Perrigue

Hello! My name is Brittanny Perrigue and I am a Type One Diabetic. My diagnosis is fairly new, and I am by no means an expert on all thing’s diabetes. Let’s not sugar coat this: I am a twenty-six-year-old attorney who is just trying to figure out how to adult, advocate for my clients, keep myself alive, keep my dog alive, and still have a life outside of my job!

Dania, who was one of my fellow classmates in law school and the host of Difficult Names Blog, reached out to me and asked if I would share my story with you all. I love this blog and read it when I need a break from work or life. Dania does amazing work here and has created a blog that encourages much needed positivity on social media, so I was absolutely thrilled when she asked me to share a little bit of my life with you all.

When I was on summer break between my 2L and 3L year of law school, I went on a trip to Thailand just a few weeks before the semester began. I traveled alone and met a group in Bangkok who I traveled across the country with. This was single-handedly one of the best trips I had ever taken. I held a python in a coconut farm and rode and bathed an elephant at an elephant sanctuary in the jungle. I drank fresh pineapple juice and alternated pad thai and fried rice every single meal while I was there. I even ate a fried cricket as a dare from my father. What I didn’t know at the time was that my body was slowly giving up on me.

Python

After coming back from Thailand, I jumped right back into work and planned on spending the rest of my summer interning in a local district court. A few days into my internship I was sitting in the jury box observing a contested hearing when I noticed my right leg was completely numb. Nervous, I slowly stood up and tried to make my way back to chambers. I ended up falling and going to the emergency room. After the doctor and nurses tested me for every exotic disease under the sun, I was informed that I was diabetic. I was shocked. I was informed that my blood sugar levels were so high I could have a stroke. I was 23 years old at the time and because I didn’t have insurance, I was released from the hospital without really any other information. My mother managed to get me into an endocrinologist who initially diagnosed me as a type 2 diabetic. Further tests would reveal I was actually type 1.

meds

Looking back now, I can see all the symptoms I was having clearly indicate that I was sick, but the scariest part is the same symptoms are that of an exhausted law student. I was tired, cranky, had terrible mood swings, blurry vision, stomach pains (I thought it was acid re flux from anxiety), and I had lost over 70 pounds without even trying. A lot of my symptoms also mimicked symptoms of stress.

I just celebrated my three-year anniversary since being diagnosed. In these three years I graduated from law school, passed the Texas Bar Exam, started my career as a Staff Attorney who helps survivors of disasters in their legal recovery at the third largest legal aid in the country, and I recently got engaged! I started dating my fiancé just weeks before I was hospitalized. Upon my diagnosis, I gave him an out. I reminded him that our relationship was new and if he didn’t want to deal with daily struggles of my diabetes, he could take the out. Clearly, he didn’t, and I am so grateful!

swearing in

engagement

I have an amazing support system of friends, family, and coworkers. My fiancé has saved my life so many times from low blood sugars. He doesn’t wear a cape, but he does usually have some sort of candy or juice box, and that’s what really counts. I recently started using an insulin pump and her name is Ruth! She is the silent dissenter because she vibrates every time I have a high or low blood sugar. Downside, she photo-bombs most of my photos. Finally, I have a job that is extremely accommodating. Whether I am running late because my insulin pump tube got caught in the door (yes, this happens more than I care to admit) or I am hangry in my office and our paralegal brings me a snack, my work family supports me by allowing me to continue fighting for my clients both inside the courtroom and out.

pink and white

I want to end this post with this: Persons with diabetes are fighters. Every single day we fight our bodies, we fight stigma, we fight affordability of medical costs, and some of us even fight for justice in the courtroom. Type one diabetes and type two diabetes are not the same. I did not do anything to my body that caused my diabetes, but it has made me a stronger person. It has also made me bionic. Be kind to one another, and to my fellow diabetics don’t forget you’re a #diabadass.

September Favorites

Currently reading: You Are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero. I highly recommend this book even though I am not done reading it. This is because I finished reading her other book, You Are a Badass, and I LOVED it! Typically self-help books tend to fall into the same category for me. That category is, “This starts out strong, but dies out about halfway through for me.” But not this one! Sincero’s lessons about manifesting what you desire (essentially through the law of attraction) may sound a little woo woo, but they work! I don’t know if it just helped me be more positive or if I’m actually honing in on my manifestation skills, but this book is life-changing. Now I want to do the same with my money, so here I am!

Currently listening to: My Favorite Murder with Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. Y’all, I live for this podcast. I am a true crime junkie through and through, and Karen and Georgia have found a way to make this hilarious. The combination of true crime and comedy sounds weird, but it actually livens up a really dark subject. This is due to the fact that Karen and Georgia mostly make fun of themselves and the weird surrounding circumstances of the murders they’re talking about (never the victims, obviously!). Throw in their love for talking about mental health, therapy, and their pets and you can see why I am obsessed.

Currently eating: HelloFresh! I took the plunge and finally decided to try this out since I’ve been experimenting with both cooking and my budgeting skills (neither is going well). So far, it’s been really cool! I get my box delivered at home once a week. I’ve chosen a two meal plan for two people (so that’s four meals since I live alone – and that’s not supposed to sound sad). From a scale of one to ten, with ten being excellent, I rate myself a four in the kitchen. I am honestly just barely trying to learn how to cook. So for someone who is a four and doesn’t have a lot of experience cooking, the recipes that come in the HelloFresh box are EASY. If I can follow them, you can, too. It took me longer than what it should to finish the meal and I may have burned some bacon here and there, but with a little more practice I bet I’ll get up to at least a six in the kitchen. LOL. High standards.

Currently shopping: My damn closet! Remember earlier when I mentioned I was trying to budget? I have a stupid amount of clothes and they do not fit in my closet. It’s so cramped in there. So, this month I am trying really hard not to shop anywhere but my closet. It’s actually been kind of fun so far. I’ve realized I tend to buy clothes for any little outing and then forget that I have that particular garment. The challenge now is making more outfits out of the clothes I already have. I pride myself on my style, so it’s a fun little challenge to see how many cute outfits I can make out of the clothes I already own.

Currently watching: Scream the TV show, season three on Netflix. I am a die hard fan of slasher movies (see what I did there?) and Scream is my all-time favorite slasher film. Thus, I am obsessed with all things Scream, including all the sequels and the t.v. show. I am biased because I love Scream so much, so it’s hard for me to find a flaw in the show. I will say it is pretty cheesy, but it’s still entertaining. I also love Fall and Halloween vibes, so this is the perfect show to watch in my pumpkin themed pajamas with all my pumpkin spice candles on. What’s your favorite scary movie?!

One Goal You Can Make This Month to Benefit Your Mental Health

  1. Establish a morning routine. This can mean sitting with your cup of coffee and meditating, reading a devotional, writing in your journal, working out, or all of the above! Morning routines are essential to starting your day off with your head on straight instead of waking up and immediately running around. Wake up a little earlier if you need to, but make sure you’re dedicating the time to YOU and only you.
  2. Try to workout at least three times a week. A workout doesn’t have to be intense to count as a good workout. Just get your body moving. Whether it’s taking a long walk, doing twenty minutes of yoga, or running around playing with your kids or your pets, just get active.
  3. Write in a journal. You can journal about anything! If you’ve never journaled before, here are some ideas:
      • There are exercises called “brain dumps” in which you simply “dump” everything going on in your mind onto the paper. Don’t worry about punctuation or your handwriting. So long as it makes sense to  you, just write it all out. It will feel like a weight off your shoulders. You can leave it as is or go back and think of solutions for each issue you’re facing. Write those down, too! The point is to clear your mind.
      • Write about your day. You don’t have to start with “Dear Diary.” LOL. Just write about anything interesting that happened or how your day went.
      • Write things you’re grateful for. This can be in a quick list format or emphasize some details. It will make you happy to go back and read them.
      • If you can’t think of anything to write, look up quotes that you like and write those down for motivation!
  4. Try meditating. Start with three minutes if five or ten minutes seems too intimidating and work your way up! Meditating in the mornings is recommended to start your day off calmly and remind you to breathe.
  5. Read a self-help book.Reading in general is good for your mental health, especially when winding down at night to get to bed. To get you started, check out You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero. Get ready for all the feel-good feels.
  6. Drink more water. Before you go to bed, place a cup or bottle of water on your nightstand so it’s easy to hydrate first thing in the morning. Yes, you’re going to pee a lot when you hydrate more, but that’s good! It means your body is releasing all the toxins.
  7. Incorporate “greens” into your meals. I read somewhere that for every meal, you should aim to have four things: greens, protein, fiber, and a healthy fat. Start slow by incorporating some green foods into your day, every day, even if it’s not with every meal. This will benefit your health and you’ll feel good about making even a small difference that’s good for you.
  8. Practice affirmations. Write them on sticky notes and tape them all over your room, apartment, house, car, wherever! Say them to yourself over and over.
  9. Get more sleep. Sleep is soooo important to feeling your best! If you have trouble getting to sleep at night, get off your phone and stop watching t.v. two hours before you plan to be in bed and start winding down. Take a bath, light some candles or a diffuser with some essential oils, or read to get your brain into rest mode. Chamomile tea is also great for sleeping!
  10. Spend time outside. Even if it’s just ten minutes for a short walk or sitting in some sunlight, being outside does the body and the brain good. Don’t get on your phone, either. Just relax a little and enjoy the sunshine.

Five Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me

  1. I completed my first year of law school TWICE! No, I didn’t fail my first time. I finished my first year at New England School of Law in Boston, MA and withdrew. I took a year off because I wasn’t sure if law school was for me and I needed some time to figure out my options. I went back after my year off, but it’s a rule that if you withdraw from school for more than one year, you have to start all over. I knew in my heart this is where I wanted to be, so start all over I did! And I finished this time!
  2. Spanish is my first language. This may not come as a surprise to many, but it’s true. My mother does not speak English, so I didn’t learn to speak English until I was about five-years-old.
  3. I’m a semi-professional dancer. Well, more like a has been at this point. I started taking ballet lessons at age two until age seventeen. When I was twenty-four, I auditioned for a local dance team for the NBA D-League and I made it! This was a really fun experience for me, but I only danced for one year before I went back to law school.
  4. I majored in English and Communications when I was an undergraduate student. I was the entertainment editor for my university’s newspaper, as well as a staff writer prior to that. I applied and interviewed to become the commentary editor, but I was offered the entertainment editor position instead. It was a great fit!
  5. I worked for Red Bull for two years while I was in college. It was the most fun job I’ve ever had, period! I’m still extremely good friends with most of the girls I worked with and Red Bull truly brought us together.

You Will Be Happy Again

Recently, I was reading through my journal. The first entry is from less than a year ago, but there’s a vast difference between that entry and my most recent entry. In my first entry, I was experiencing real heartbreak. I was sad and upset and hurt, but I was trying to keep my head up. I remember writing that entry. I remember where I was and how I felt. And it felt like absolute shit.

At the time, everything around me felt dark. It was heavy, and I was an emotional wreck. Fast forward to my most recent entries and you’d think a different person wrote them. I can’t stop gushing about how happy I am and how free I feel. It’s light, it’s positive, it’s exciting.

But what struck me the most is that when I wrote that first entry all those months ago, I was sure I wouldn’t get over my feelings of sadness and despair. I couldn’t imagine what being happy felt like. And yet, here I am — happier and more liberated than I’ve ever been in my life.

Isn’t it strange how time does heal wounds when you’re not thinking about them? Or when you are thinking about them twenty-four hours a day? Time is still working in your favor, no matter what. Yes, I’ve been working on myself these past few months, but no, it hasn’t been easy. It hasn’t been a great day every day. It’s been a roller coaster. And yet, I have made it past a really dark part of the forest.

I read a quote once that said I had to honor myself every day… every day is not the same so I cannot be the same every day either. We expect to feel a certain way every single morning that we wake up, but to expect ourselves to believe we do not change or go through several emotions as the hours go by is to restrict our feelings from working themselves out. It’s okay to feel and be different every day that you wake up.

So I’m just here to remind you – it may feel impossible today, but you will be happy again. It may feel like you’re never going to laugh again, but your stomach will hurt from rolling over with laughter one of these days. The day will come when you’re going to smile and it won’t be fake. You’ll feel that smile lighting up all of your insides.

Things get dark, but the sun rises every single morning. If you keep going, if you keep looking within yourself, and if you look back to see how far you’ve come, you’ll notice that you’re doing much better than when you started. Hopefully, you’ll also notice the time and space around you at this moment and how once, you may have prayed for all the things you have now. It’s a good day.
